Did you know?

  • More than four million Americans would die every year without life-saving blood transfusions.

  • About 60% of Americans are eligible to donate blood, but only 5% do.

  • To be eligible to donate you must be at least 17 years old, weight 100 pounds, in general good health, and not have donated whole blood in the past 56 days.

  Am I eligible to donate blood?

Condition/Medication Qualification
Acne Meds Accutane defers a donor for 30 days after the last dose.
AIDS Permanently disqualified.
Allergies OK to donate.  Medication or Shots OK.
Most Antibiotics The Donor will be accepted 24 hours after completion of therapy.
Blood Pressure Must be within acceptable limits.  Most medications are acceptable, but must be reviewed by SBB staff.
Cancer Melanoma, leukemia, lymphoma are permanent deferrals.  All other forms of cancer are deferred for 5 years.  (Basal Cell Skin Cancer no deferral).
Diabetes All diabetics, if well controlled my oral medication or insulin, are allowed to donate.
Heart Disease Chest pain - the donor will be evaluated by collection staff.
Mitral Vale - the donor is eligible if symptom-free.
Heart Cath - the donor is deferred for 6 months.
Angioplasty - the donor is deferred for 12 months.
Cardio Vascular Surgery - an open heart patient is deferred for 18 months.
Viral Hepatitis (Or Yellow Jaundice) OK if before age 11.  If after 11th birthday, the donor will be permanently deferred.
Hepatitis Exposure The donor exposed to hepatitis, and is symptom-free for 12 months will be accepted.
Malaria If the donor has traveled in a malaria area, the donor will be deferred for 12 months.
Medications Aspirin, birth control bills, antihistamines and thyroid medications will not disqualify the donor.  Most medications are not a problem.  Our staff will need to document the exact name of your medications on your donor card each time you donate.
Menstruation OK to donate.  The donor should use her own discretion.
Pregnancy The donor will be accepted 6 weeks after delivery, miscarriage, or abortion.
Tattoos The donor needs to wait one year after they have received a tattoo.
Vaccinations Hepatitis - 1 day wait.
Chicken Pox - 2 week wait.
MMR - 4 week wait.
Flu Shot - No wait.
Oral Polio - 2 week wait.

  Deferrals for Athletic Activities

  Some athletes may need to be deferred on the day of a competition

Golf Any age donor may donate the same day as a golf game.
Tennis Any age donor by donate the same day as a tennis match.
Track Defer the day of the meet or game unless it is six hours prior to the event.
Soccer Defer the day of the meet or game unless it is six hours prior to the event
Running Accept all adult recreational runners.
Basketball/Football
Volleyball
Defer the day of the competition.
Wrestling Defer the day of the competition.
Swimming Defer the day of the competition.
